4:25 And Adam had marital relations ¹  with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth, saying, “God has given ²  me another child ³  in place of Abel because Cain killed him.”

42:28 He said to his brothers, “My money was returned! Here it is in my sack!” They were dismayed; ⁴  they turned trembling one to another ⁵  and said, “What in the world has God done to us?” ⁶

48:20 So he blessed them that day, saying,

“By you ⁷  will Israel bless, ⁸  saying,

‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’”

So he put Ephraim before Manasseh. ⁹ 

[4:25]  ¹ tn Heb “knew,” a frequent euphemism for sexual relations.

[4:25]  ² sn The name Seth probably means something like “placed”; “appointed”; “set”; “granted,” assuming it is actually related to the verb that is used in the sentiment. At any rate, the name שֵׁת (shet) and the verb שָׁת (shat, “to place, to appoint, to set, to grant”) form a wordplay (paronomasia).

[4:25]  ³ tn Heb “offspring.”

[42:28]  ⁴ tn Heb “and their heart went out.” Since this expression is used only here, the exact meaning is unclear. The following statement suggests that it may refer to a sudden loss of emotional strength, so “They were dismayed” adequately conveys the meaning (cf. NRSV); NIV has “Their hearts sank.”

[42:28]  ⁵ tn Heb “and they trembled, a man to his neighbor.”

[42:28]  ⁶ tn Heb “What is this God has done to us?” The demonstrative pronoun (“this”) adds emphasis to the question.

[48:20]  ⁷ tn The pronoun is singular in the Hebrew text, apparently elevating Ephraim as the more prominent of the two. Note, however, that both are named in the blessing formula that follows.

[48:20]  ⁸ tn Or “pronounce a blessing.”
